Winter 2010

Back To Standard Time, Oh My

This newsletter is being sent on the Sunday we all set our clocks back, an in-your-face reminder that the cold weather is arriving and the best days of Autumn are behind us. This has always been my least favorite time of year as the days are often cloudy as well as short. Ah well, this too shall pass.

It helps to make these days pass by staying busy and seeking opportunities to be with friends. You'll find plenty of events in the Calendar each month to get out and connect with others. Take a class or begin a Tai Chi or Yoga practice. They are both healthy and a place to meet others.

Or invite a friend to a movie - we review 'Hereafter' in the blog and offer some 2012 films if you would like to dig into that topic.

You'll also see a review in photos of the successful first Coventry Farmers' Market Holistic Wellness Fair. It proved a good complement to the market as people shopping for local and organic foods have already chosen to pursue a healthy life style.

In our next newsletter we'll bring you an updated Holistic Health Practitioner Directory, the annual listing of active practitioners in our region of the state.

The holidays and the Winter Solstice are right around the corner bringing their own light to the dark days of early Winter. We live in a world of duality and its the cold and darkness that gives us an appreciation of the warmth and light. I'll try to keep that in mind until Spring.

Upcoming Events

There are no major events planned for our region for the remainder of 2010. However, in the next few weeks we have a couple of interesting items and an outside author in the area.

On Saturday, November 13, Clearpoint Center in Stafford Springs holds its annual One Night Show. This year it features MIKE COHEN Kirtan, a tour with SHANNON MCCARTHY of the 2010 painting collection, a short film screening by ROGER INGRAHAM, and the work of a team of Collaborating Artists. Natural gourmet delicacies will be served. One night a year, one phenomenal experience!

Chicago author and lecturer ANDREW HARVEY will make three appearances the weekend of November 12-14 at the Unity Church of Greater Hartford in South Windsor. Andrew is the author of "The Hope," a compelling guide that helps people respond to current global challenges, yet also serves as a much needed wake-up call to inspire action through Sacred Activism.

Raised in India and educated in England, it was his return to India where a series of mystical experiences initiated his spiritual journey. Over the next thirty years he plunged into different mystical traditions to learn their secrets and practices. In 1978 he met a succession of Indian saints and sages and began his long study and practice of Hinduism. He will speak Friday night and Sunday with an all day workshop Saturday on 'Sacred Activism: The Birth of the Divine Human.'

New Photo Album

On Sunday, September 12, as part of the Coventry Farmers' Market, the Alliance For Holistic Living hosted a Wellness Fair with 25 tents and a variety of demonstrations, energy work and massage available. This was the only holistic health fair of any type taking place in our region of the state this year. There were over 20 exhibitors with many practitioners offering free energy, massage, reflexology and vibrational mini-sessions. Other practitioners represented naturopathy, chiropractic, nutrition, personal training, shamanism, past life regression and psychotherapy. There were demonstrations of Tai Chi, gongs, Tibetan bowls, mindful eating, hooping and drumming. See it for yourself on our new album.

Quixote's Blog: Hereafter

I saw the new Spielberg-Eastwood-Damon movie this week. "Hereafter" is one of the best recent portrayals of psychic phenomena in a way that most of us can relate to. It's the story of three people trying to understand and come to terms with their experiences - one has a near death experience, another is a reluctant psychic-medium and the third suffered a tragic loss. Three stories that through sychronicity and intention bring the characters to resolution and an understanding of what the hereafter might be. I think you will enjoy it.

This blog on the movie also addresses the contribution Stephen Spielberg makes to our understanding of consciousness and what reality might include.

2012 Movies

As soon as the 2012 Mystery began to attract attention moviemakers began planning films about the subject. . . and I began to track them for the Spiritual Cinema column in The Door Opener.

Most of those produced are documentaries and some projects, originally planned, have been cancelled. Summaries and the status of 2012 films have been brought together for Conscious CT readers in the Spiritual Cinema section of the website. These films are a good way to become familiar with the many writers and experts in the field and to get an overview of the subject. Enjoy.

Out And About

On Friday, October 8, Mad Agnes played their last concert in the area at the Unity Church of Greater Hartford in South Windsor. After ten years on the road they are ready for a something new. Mad Agnes is MARGO HENNEBACH, ADRIENNE JONES and MARK SAUNDERS. Per one review, "Like a crazy three-headed alchemist, Mad Agnes combines the elements of classical and folk, then crosses the poignancy of the singer/songwriter with street-theatre smarts. Into this brew, she infuses choral arrangements, a cappella and zany madrigal singing."

We met Margo and Mark many years ago when they were part of a "Conversations With God" book group hosted by DEB and WAYNE VEILLEUX. Margo is also a Feldenkrais practitioner offering classes at Sacred Rivers in Glastonbury several times a year. Adrienne is a Reiki practitioner and also creates and officiates rite-of-passage ceremonies. Although this was there last concert in the area their music is available on CD and they will be performing at Unity Church on Christmas Eve.

Enchantments in Manchester

Support Local Business At Christmas

As you do your holiday shopping please support the businesses in our region. The holiday season can be the 'make it or break it' time for small stores and crafts people. As the 'big box' stores have moved into Manchester, Glastonbury and Enfield, and people do more Internet shopping, it has taken its toll on our small specialty stores and local businesses that give flavor to our community.

Shop owners have years of expertise in their specialty - be it herbs, gems and minerals, or Wicca and they are happy to share it and guide you. The products they carry tend to be unique, not what you will find at the mall, and they make great gifts.

Also consider the area artists that offer a taste of what they do in our Artists' Corner. They each offer a variety of original art and art products that make distinctive gifts.
