Country Fair Season
Along with the return to school in September is the return of classes and activities in the area. September in Connecticut also means many traditional fairs celebrating the harvest. And we have two big ones in our region coming up in the next weeks.
Next weekend, on Sunday, September 12 you'll have the opportunity to attend the only 2010 holistic health fair in our region. It will be held in combination with the Coventry Farmers' Market, which was recently voted Connecticut's top farmers' market. The following weekend on Sunday, September 19 the annual Taste! Organic Connecticut will be held at Manchester Community College. Read more about both below.
In the Environmental Section of the website we've added a page on Green Homes and updated our Connecticut Clean Energy Community Scorecard. Is your town taking advantage of free solar installations?
Our September Calendar shows a traditionally busy September with a smorgasbord of choices. Twenty area events are listed for the week of September 12 alone. Many activities are returning and there are also new ones available. Included are classes starting at Vernon Adult Ed as well as Manchester Community College. So pick a few things to try this Fall. Take a class. Go to a workshop on something you know little about. Experience a teacher you've only heard about. There is so much to enjoy and lean from.
We also continue to explore using Facebook to keep you up-to-date with all the things happening between newsletters. Remember you don't have to be on Facebook yourself to check out our page.

On Sunday, September 12, as part of the Coventry Farmers' Market, the Alliance For Holistic Living will host a Wellness Fair with about 25 tents and a variety of demonstrations, energy work and massage available. This will be the only holistic health fair of any type taking place in our region of the state this year. If you've never been to the Coventry Farmers' Market this is your opportunity. Coventry is the largest Farmers' Market in the state and one of the best in New England.
The Market and Fair are open from 11-2. There will be over 20 exhibitors with many practitioners offering free energy, massage, reflexology and vibrational mini-sessions. Other practitioners will represent naturopathy, chiropractic, nutrition, personal training, shamanism, past life regression and psychotherapy. There will be demonstrations of Tai Chi, gongs, Tibetan bowls, mindful eating, hooping and drumming. And, of course, you'll want to visit the vendors and farmers at the main market.

Taste! Organic Connecticut is an annual celebration of local organic agriculture. It will be held Sunday, September 19, 10-4, at Manchester Community College near the bandstand. Sponsored by the Northeast Organic Food Association (NOFA), this event offers the opportunity to purchase fresh vegetables and fruits, honey, maple syrup, organically grown plants and items from local crafters and herbalists. Hourly workshops, delicious grilled vegetables for lunch, information tables, live music and children’s events all add to the charm of the day.

Out And About
On Saturday, August 28, the Alliance For Holistic Living and friends created a labyrinth at the home of NORTON and LINDA BERKOWITZ in Tolland, just off the Green. After an opening ceremony blessing the land and the labyrinth led by PAT HINCHEY, a dozen people lugged rocks, sunk them in the ground and built a rock stairway to the labyrinth entrance. The weather was great and with many hands the job went smoothly.
Everyone is invited to visit and walk the labyrinth. It's located at 2 Cider Mill Road. Park in the circle and use the stairs in the wall.

CONNECTICUT CLEAN ENERGY COMMUNITY SCORECARD - CTCleanEnergyOptions is a Department of Public Utilities Control (DPUC) approved program that allows any CL&P customer the opportunity to support clean energy made from approved renewable resources such as wind, small hydro and landfill gas. The Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program provides communities an opportunity to support clean energy alongside its local residents, businesses, and institutions. By joining this program towns make a commitment to using 20% clean energy by 2010 and can earn free clean energy systems ($10,000 minimum value) each time they achieve certain goals.
We created a Scorecard in the Environmental Section of our website to follow how our East of the River communities are doing and have just updated it. Over the past year there has been very little progress towards our 2010 goals. The average participation is 1.9% of households up from 1.6% in the past year. Six of our 15 towns still have not signed up for the program and only 4 towns have earned free solar systems. Check the Scorecard to see how your town is doing and to learn more about the program.
